If he is biting the hard bars of a crate, but he needs to be confined, have you thought of a soft 'crate'. They are round and I really liked them. I think Amazon or E bay has them. There are only soft materials and it would be hard for him to chew.
Hope he feels 100% again soon and his gums close up on the loose teeth soon.
Just looked under soft pet crates on Amazon and at the bottom of the list is the kind I am talking about. A blue 45" pen.
