Have you tried giving treats and loves when you use his name? My little Maltese girl is like this. She will love for a minute or two, then she wants to sit on the sofa by herself. This does not mean she doesn't love me. She loves me dearly and shows it in many ways, but she does not like to cuddle. She is very independent. She will also only come to her name when "she" wants to come. I have to be really firm some times when she isn't listening to let her know I'm serious. When she hears that "tone" of voice, then she will come to me.
