I am not a breeder, but this is what I know:

Price depends on region, quality, amount of tests/procedures already done by the breeder, show or pet quality etc....

Some breeders do nothing but breed two dogs together and sell the pups.

Other breeders do genetic testing on both parents to ensure health of pups, worm and most or all shots, dock tails, a puppy check up (including blood work) to ensure the pup is healthy so they can offer their 1 to 5 year health guarantees, begin crate and pee pad training, etc.......

Some breeders do somewhere in between the above two.

In other words, pups from puppy mills will always be cheapest, back yard breeders are usually in the middle, and pups from reputable breeders who offer health guarantees are the most.
