I totally understand why you would feel this way, I really do.

But honestly, I truly think/believe that ERs would help any/every animal if they were a charity and had the means to do so. I don't think it has anything to do w/ actual compassion - but has to do with the fact that they're a business with real expenses, and no recourse (no gov't subsidies like human hospitals have) for people who wouldn't pay in the end.

When I've had to go to pet ERs, I've not found their prices to be terribly inflated. The prices are more in some areas (ie, office calls etc), but I would expect them to be bc they are also paying more for their personnel to be there at all hours for our pets. We can't expect them to not expect payment from us...I don't know any business that could run like that unless subsidized by our gov't.

Again, it's tragic this happened and I so wish this precious one could have been treated by the ER and was still alive today.

For the rest of us, it's a very sad lesson that we should all be over-prepared for emergencies. They truly do happen.
