I can see both sides of this event. As a breeder, I can only speak from MY side of the issue.
All my prospective new owners are completely and thoroughly vetted by me BEFORE they ever even see a puppy. They have been on my waiting list for a puppy for as long as a year, maybe more.... Questionnaires are filled out and returned, questions are asked and answered, telephone calls are made by me, and vets are questioned about the care the prospective buyers have shown with past/current pets. Anyone who is looking to purchase one of my babies, completely understands every thing I do, and why I do it....if they are reluctant or feel like I am being "intrusive into personal business just because I am selling them a dog", they are encouraged to find a puppy elsewhere. All the years I have done this, I can honestly say there are only 1-3 people that left without a dog, a mutual decision made by both of us. All my new owners are like family and remain as such, for the life of that dog.....I get updates on almost 85% of the dogs I have ever sold, every Christmas.....I keep up with my owners and my babies, and I have people return for a second and third member to their family......
I KNOW my families long before they ever come to pick out a puppy from me. I have had only one family that I had some reservations about....I couldnt put my finger on anything specific, just a gut feeling something was not right....they bought the baby, and then they did return the puppy in less than a week....I am not sure what happened, I think they realized their busy schedules were indeed not really conducive to owning and caring for a puppy, which had been a concern of mine.....after they took the baby, it became clear to them they were not ready for a puppy at this time in their busy lives, and they brought the baby back to me in perfect condition with everything they had bought for their new baby....it was what was best for everyone concerned. I also had questioned these people before they took the baby, to make certain they were ready to manage a new puppy into their lives....they assured me they were, and they had outlined in detail for me, the intended schedule/training/walking/playing/etc set aside for the puppy.....but if it had become clear to me when they came to get the puppy that they were for any reason not the right home for that baby, I never would have let that baby go home with them, and their deposit paid would have been returned to them at that time.
How many times had you met with this breeder before you bought the baby? Had paperwork/applications been submitted, so she would have an idea about where her baby was going to live? How many times had you met with/talked in detail, at length, this breeder prior to picking up the baby? My new owners are like friends to me...they are extended members of the family, not just people dropping cash for a dog....is this the type of close relationship you had with this breeder?
She did return your money for the puppy, so you can find another puppy. I can imagine the disappointment you experienced....try to understand what the breeder may be experiencing.....these little babies are like our own kids, and I never send one of my "kids" out of here without knowing as much as I possibly can, about who the people are that are taking my baby.
