Default Bad Breath

This may be a stupid question but how do you tell if your dog has bad breath or it is a dog smell?

Boomer's breath up close when he tries to kiss me or breathes heavily has a smell to it. Not horrible but definitely not pleasing. I only smell it when he is in my face and it usually make me not want him to kiss me. I have only noticed it the past week or so. I'm not too concerned but I really don't know what I should be looking for.

He was just seen by the vet who did not recommend any dental cleanings. He just advised to keep brushing their teeth daily. Boomer does have some tartar on his teeth but the Vet didn't seem to worried about it.

His gums are not bleeding and he doesn't seem to be in any pain. The vet did blood work while I was there and it was all normal (cbc and chem lab)

Additionally, he is on Temporal P (spelling off) 1/2 a tablet every other day. Could that be causing the smell?
