\it is kind of like the wild west out there. There are so many different health guarantees.

Many many guarantees require you to return your puppy if a/b or c goes wrong - and then you do NOT get a refund - you get a replacement puppy.

Those guarantees are quite simply worth nothing to the pet owner. For who would want to give up a puppy that they have grown to loveÉ

Many more health guarantees will not cover genetic defects or if so only on a very limited basis - such as Liver Shunt or LP etc et c and only for one year. Many genetic defects do not show up in the first year at all.

My personal belief is that the health guarantee should reflect the quality of the breeder. Their passion and belief in the breed - and a weighted,a fair balance of responsibility for their breeding and the acknowledgement of how future parental care can and very often does impact the health of their puppy as they age.

I believe that knowledgeable breeders have a responsibility to disclose all of the more common ailments of Yorkies - to see this go to the library and see the Top 10 Health concerns of Yorkies.

I believe for Yorkies breeders really can't warrantee against LP LS Cataracts PRA but they can screen and test their breeding dogs for this. Two clear dogs could still produce a pup with one or more of the above. But there is less chance and in particular if the breeder has a clear health history knowledge of their lines.

I think that all puppy owners should purchase pet insurance or have the funds set aside available for emergencies and or health isssues that can develop over the first 2-3 yrs of life. For certain as your dog ages and becomes a senior they will likely require more vet care for age related health issues.


The puppy should be warranted against infectious diseases and have a vet exam very close to the time you pick them up.

You should take your puppy in for your vet to exam with in 48 hrs to do a full wellness screening - ideally including blood work.
