Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Harnesses and collars are like clothes: there is no perfect solution. Anything touching a Yorkie coat has the potential to cause problems, including topknot bands.
A satin harness would probably be best, but my boys require something to hold them really securely. They are escape artists! We use the Buddy Belt leather harness and do not have matting if I make sure the front legs/armpits are combed out thoroughly first (my boys are in full coat). If there are tangles to start, yes, wearing a harness will make the tangles worse.
