The main thing is don't give up. It took a solid month to get Dinky to understand the concept. I corralled him in the kitchen during the day with boxes at the room openings. He was not allowed run of the house until he was potty trained.
I tried the pee pads, but I liked him going outside much better.
I would say that it took two full months before I considered him trained. He back slid a couple of times. Both times, I went back to limiting him to kitchen, and he understood what that was about.
Also, when you do get him to go outside, praise the heck out of him. We still praise Dinky 5 years later.
Some dogs and some Yorkies are harder to train than others. It can be frustrating, but he will get it.
