Ginger has several coats, and I deal with the harness differently depending on the style of coat. Some have holes that you can poke the leash through. Some have their closure along the back, I just hook up the leash to the harness and close the coat around. Others have no hole (or the hole is in the wrong place, and close on the dogs belly. Then I just enlarge her harness a bit and she wears it over her coat. She has several harnesses (I like lupine's H harness) so color-coordinating has not been a problem. GW Little has some adorable coat/harnesses. They're coat and harness in one.
