Praise is just so important for teaching these little guys and gals when they're young. I remember potty training Cookie I'd act like she just cured cancer every time she squatted down and peed or pooped outside. "Oh, you peed outside like the big girls do!" and then a parade around the house. And same thing for the leash. "Oh look at my leash girl! My Cookie monster knows how to use the leash! Oh that's a good yorkie! Gimme yorkie kiss"
