There is research on medium to large breed dogs that the long bones continue to grow if spay or neuter is done too early - ie before the boney growth plates close.

Having said that it is likely for the toy breeds this is not so much of an issue - although there are no studies that speak to toy breeds specifically. It is likely that the toy breeds close their growth plates at or around 8mths old.
