Gates have been a problem for us as well. We had been using one that had a door that we could open to walk through but that was the one Max caught his foot under and broke 2 bones so we won't use that anymore. We are currently using the old fashioned baby gate and I hate it because I have to keep stepping over it. The shelf looks interesting but I would worry because it looks to be free standing and Max is always scratching at the gate when we are on the other side. Toni found this and I am going to build a couple of them. I can build them any width or height I choose and they are inexpensive. And with a small magnet or piece of velcro in the right place they can stay in the open position when needed.
