We use shelves from Home Depot and stand them up on their lip - you can get them in lots of sizes, you can cut them to custom sizes, can paint them, also come in different heights. I like these bc you can just leave them there (only 12" high) and can just step over them, rather than having to open a door or anything.
I also used these on our iron outdoor fencing - bc the fence gaps were too large and our kiddos could fit through...so, along the bottom we painted then attached these shelving pieces to tighten the gaps - and they are almost invisible they blend so well!
