ohhh those little rascals, they will rip off the masking tape also and bitter apple doesn't always work, one of my girls actually liked it lol. Is there anyway you can sand that area down, make it very smooth then paint with a water base paint. It is the splintered wood edges more then likely attracting their attention and this could be very dangerous if they sallow slivers of wood, or they may be trying to get out of the room they are confined to reason they are chewing that area. My last girl at the age of 12 y/o had to be confined to the kitchen, I gated it off, she chewed through the molding trying to get out of that area. Hope one of our guy members can help you out, carpentry is man's forte lol.
