I tried teaching Eddie to "shake" for weeks and I wasn't getting there. I was doing exactly what you're doing. I'd tap his paw, say "shake," then give him a treat. He never got past the tap phase.

Two days ago, a friend said "Don't give him the treat." Say "shake," and if he doesn't shake, walk away and try later. I was skeptical, but by the next day, he was raising his paw at the word "shake."

I was just being too nice with treats.
