Default pee problems, no problem

They are two rescue dogs 3-4 years old. They are good walking with a leash. I do not know if they are fully housebroken as the foster mom is home all day and either lets them run in the backyard or walks them 5-6 times a day.

My question is do I take them for walks while I am pee pad training them or do I not walk them until they know that the pee pad is where they do their business.

I plan on using the walks for socialization and exercise. During the training period I have a person coming to check on them in the afternoons and want to instruct her how to go about training them.

Also, what is the best way for pee pad training I have read a few different suggestions as to cover the entire floor with pee pads (for me that is a big area as they will be confined to an eat in kitchen when I am at work) or just take them to the pad after meals and wait for them to go.

For those that say do not pee pad train them in my situation it would be best as I live in a high rise and the winter can get pretty bad. I appreciate any feedback/suggestions.

I thank you for this post, actually brave, and always starts controversial discussion. My dog uses an indoor puppy potty, (disclaimer, we invented it just for her, we sell it at Petco, but the profits go to shelters) and I can see how much more comfortable it has made her life. I sometimes get tied up at work, and Jazz was not able to hold her bladder that long. I believe for those of us that work, allowing your dog the comfort of an indoor potty is a time that has come.

Training is really easy, I would suggest not using pads at all, as they are messy, not environmentally friendly, expensive if you cover the whole room. Also, many dogs are reluctant to reuse a wet pad. I do see washable pads discussed on this forum. Just be consistent, keep the potty in your bathroom or somewhere they an easily access it. Good training tips on http://dogtoilettraining.com for indoor dog potty.

We are kicking the holy grail saying this, and standard training tell us to wield control over our dogs, but my dog is the love of my life, and I want her to be comfortable. Good for you! Many people I get "hate mail" from do not work, they are home all day, and don't understand that there are those of us that need to work and enjoy that cold wet nose when we come home....thump thump, thump, that is Jazz's tail as she agrees with me.
