I would crate them while you are gone. Some dogs chew and some dogs don't. I have a 5 year old Setter that is loose in 3 rooms of the house and he has never chewed up a single thing. My older Yorkie that I adopted 9 months ago will tip over the trash and dig through it when left alone. The 2 puppies steal and chew everything. I crate the puppies when I leave for more than 15 minutes. Even when I am home they sometimes chew things up, but I try to watch them closely. They have access to 2 rooms while I am home. They will never have full access to the entire house as none of the dogs get that. At night my 2 Yorkies sleep in my bed and my daughter's Yorkie sleeps in her bed. It gives them time with us so they can cuddle.

Working during the day will work out, they will adjust to your schedule. Good luck.

If they learn not to chew then you can start crating them in the kitchen and then if they prove themselves worthy maybe another room as well, in time. Later on, after they are adjusted (a few months at least) start leaving them for 15 minutes out of a crate and then if they are good, do 30 minutes out of a crate while you are gone. That is how I get mine to adjust to being out while I am gone. My puppies are only 6 months old so they have a while to go before they are ready to be left out more than a few minutes.
