Yes, I rub it into Caleb's fur.
He gets awful dry skin...well he did before we used the coconut oil. His skin is lovely now. He also gets rashes when ever we go out, he'll pee on plants and get a rash, the oil soothes him and stops the itching.
His skin is so much better. No scabby dry patches anymore. If he's going to have a bath, we put extra oil on a day in advance. As soon as he seems dry or itchy, we rub the coconut oil in our hands (tiny amount) and then rub it on him. Works so well.

He also gets a repeat problem,one bad ear, he's on meds again for that, but vet has approved us, rubbing a tiny amount of the oil with our finger, into the top of his inner ear. All the redness disappears, and he sighs with relief. Still needs the meds (drops) for the deeper problem.

I'm sure you would anyway, but always check with a vet first, if their is a skin or ear, etc problem.
