it's normal for them to try to get anything small that moves, Lola is always after something from a fly in the house, a bee on a flower, a frog, a small bird and especially chipmunks. My last yorkie killed a mouse in our house. His pup will probably never forget about that snake and look for it every time she goes out, Lola still runs by the woodpile and the downspouts every chance she gets because she has seen chipmunks there years ago. I would suggest your son start taking his pup out to potty via a leash, to me even with a fenced in yard that is the only way to insure they potty in a timely fashion. Also there are so many small critters that are poisonous that the pup could be at risk in the future. I know of several members that lost their pups this way, one from a small frog/toad, another from a snake bite right on their porch and another one from a nut or something from a sago palm tree. Hard to believe that even a fenced in yard can be a dangerous place for a small dog
