Default studding question

I know it is possible for a female to become pregnant without a tie, I guess my question is how possible? The female has been tested and is ready, my male has sired two litters so he is proven, they are connecting just not staying connected. How common is this and what might the causes be? I have let him just keep going till he is no longer interested, I guess I don't want to continue to breed this female thinking that because there is no tie nothing is happening and then getting puppies that are several days behind in development. Any information would be welcomed, I am wondering if this might be an indicator of a problem with my male or if it is a common occurance when breeding. He tied with the first two females without any problem.

Thanks
Melanie
