A little off the subject - but I have a neighbor who was training his pup to use a puppy pad - and, of course, was discouraged if he went anyplace else in the house.
Warmer weather arrived and he started taking his pup outside - and that little dog would never go to the bathroom when he was on a leash. We think he thought it was "bad not to use his puppy pad" - and there was no way he was going to go with his owner only a few feet away. It would just wait until they went back inside.
He said though that if he let the pup loose, it would get away from him and then go to the bathroom --- but not with him nearby.
