I think if you give your older dog some time and space he will adjust just fine. I brought 2 puppies into the life of my 9 year old Yorkie and also a 6 year old English Setter. It took my older Yorkie several weeks to show any interest in the puppies but within a couple months he is very attached to them. It took my setter even longer. He is now buddies with the male puppy we brought home and tolerates the female overall. They are still working on it 3 months later, but it is going well.

It will take time, although some dogs accept a new dog over night. Most dogs learn to get along even if it does take several weeks to several months. Just be patient and it can work out.
