A hawk recently attacked and carried away a family dog in a Lexington neighborhood.
The bird attacked the 15-year-old Jack Russell Terrier named Destiny in the Plantation neighborhood, off Harrodsburg Road and Man O' War Boulevard.
"She was getting pretty old. She was limping a bit. That would have probably attracted the hawk to some degree, an animal, you know, that was somewhat wounded," Bob Newbold said.
The family actually installed decoys before the attack because of hawk sightings. Other neighbors have had close calls as well, and a hawk also attacked a chicken in the area. The Clays Mill Vet Clinic issued a warning to keep small pets on a leash and to take down bird feeders.
Hawks are federally protected, and it is illegal to kill or injure them.
