we have had coyotes live near us for years, they are actually pretty shy. Yes, small dogs left unattended are at risk as a food source. If you are up at 3AM you can hear them talk to each other..they sound like children at a party. Anyway, many moons ago I spoke to the state conservation rep who told me their numbers had been increasing for some 20 years. BTW: don't leave food of any kind out (like to feed stray cats, deer, etc) it attracts them to your property.
