I think this is a difficult topic with a minor (if so) living at home or a young adult doing the same. If your parents bought this dog for you, and pay the on going food and vet bills - then I would say they have quite a vested interest in *your* dog.
Now having said that; the dog is either yours or theirs - or perhaps a joint ownership. If it is yours then what was done was beyond pale - if it is a joint ownership same deal. How-ever if your parents consider this their dog - and you are kind of like a babysitter for it - then well they did what owners do make the decision for their dog.
Your part in this is (I believe you posted earlier your Mom always hated the long hair). Well you never dealt with her statement it seems. Never learnt why and mayhap tried to find a middle ground through the situation. Your Mom got tired of waiting for you to deal with her statement and one day took matters into her own hands.
Many parents buy dogs for their children - the wise ones know that they will have to step in if the kids do not care for the dog. But if they are baring the financial burden of a dog - they will naturally think their decisions about certain things hold prominent place.
