We had to shave Bella down pretty tight too. We put her in a onesie instead of leaving her in a cone after her surgery. After almost two weeks in her dress, her hair was knotted and unrecoverable.
She looked like a Chihuahua with a lion head for a while, but her hair is growing back in nicely. She also lost a lot of the black and tan fur but you can see her blonde and steel blue coming in. As already noted, they will change colors for the first couple of years, so don't get too attached to any particular look.
