Blazer had his first grooming around that same age and he, too, was shaved down shorter than I wanted (though he wasn't matted, he likes being combed out) and his color changed dramatically. He is now blonde with darker gold "boots" and head. I love his colors, but he didn't come out looking like the same pup I brought in! I ended up learning to groom him myself after that
