If the drainage is yellow, green, or thick white, I would have a vet take a look at the eye. If the drainage is clear, but dripping like steady tears, that would also be cause to have the vet take a look to rule out irritation and other problems.
Any redness in the white of the eye or the eyelid, any puffiness, definitely see a vet . If your pup is scratching at the eye, that could also be a sign something is wrong.
I use a wet cotton ball to clean the corners of my boys' eyes daily. Then I use a flea comb with closely spaced teeth to comb the hair in the area clean and out of the way. |    All of this!
