Just thought of something else: there are so many ways things can end up in your yard. Wildlife can carry things in from other yards. We had little kids living next door who would randomly throw things in our yard, not meaning any harm. I've read here of problems both ways with corn cobs, for instance, which are dangerous to dogs. We used to put corn cobs out for the squirrels until we learned the dangers for people with dogs in other yards.
You're right. We will probably never know how or where they found it, and even if we could find out, it wouldn't necessarily protect them in the future. We just can't control everything.
