I have to correct myself, the bolded part...they can have colitis w/out the mucus. So the term, 'every dog is different' also applies here.
Turbo had an episode where there was no mucus but he had all the other symptoms: straining to go & very often, bight red blood & he was also vomiting, not a lot, once or twice. He still had a good appetite, wanted to eat.
Took him to the vet & he gave him cerenia (anti nausea) shot, anti-diarrhea shot & some metronidazole pills. Today is day 2 on Met & he had perfect poopies this morning.
Vet thinks it's stress colitis, from the thunderstorm we had last week but he could have also eaten something he's not supposed to....like from the cherry tomato plant we have in the backyard. Turbo shows interest in that plant whenever he's back there, so I've trimmed it up on the bottom & fenced it in better & watching them like a hawk.
