Now I do this with all three of my dogs. And my Yorkie is always a big hit.
You don't have to compete in an event - you can take classes - most competitions have an open dock time where you can learn the sport.
WE occasionally will compete just for the fun of it.
Here is what I suggest. The first most important thing is to develop toy drive - I have written about this before on here. And that starts best when you first get your puppy. Here is a pic of a high drive Yorkie.

Then get them used to the water and swimming. Rivers lakes ponds - indoor doggy pools - backyard pools etc. Teach them to fetch and retrieve a water toy. That is a toy that floats in the water. This toy ideally is only used for water work. It will not be a chew toy - or one they can just play in the house with. Why? It builds up a specialness in the dogs mind of oh this toy = FUN Times.
The first exposure is key. I have a video on here made in Trent Hills where we taught two or three of Ilonas' Yorkies to jump or dive. I will link here shortly.

And finally just have fun in the great outdoors with your dog. Large or small dock diving is open to all.
