My little Maggie was pregnant (not at all planned) she was going into labor and was having a terrible time. I was looking for information to see if what was happening was a emergency or if I was just over reacting. Turns out it was indeed an emergency. Maggie was in labor for over 24 hours but was only occasionally panting and nesting. I called her vet and also another vet that said it seemed like she was only in the first stages of labor and that can last up to 3 days they asked me to watch her temp and wait for a drop to indicate 2nd stage of labor would be coming soon. Something just did not seem right I kept waiting for her temp to drop, it did not and instead within a span of 3 hours has begun to elevate, her temp went from 101.5-103 within an hour, at just that time Maggie finally began to push and out came greenish colored discharge. We rushed her to the vet an x-ray and ultrasound revealed the puppies had no heart beat. Her vet offered us the option of a C-section or to simply spay we chose to spay her, I have no desire to ever attempt to have her carry puppies again. We brought Maggie home about 6 hours ago since bringing her home she has only lied in bed she drinks water and she ate just a little now we were told this is normal. Within the last 1 hour or so she has begun shaking or trembling some she had pain medication before leaving the office (Metacam) which they sent home with her too she is also on antibiotics. I guess after everything that happened I am second guessing myself and I just am asking advice or to hear experiences from other yorkie parents. I am so worried about my girl she is only supposed to get the pain medication once a day which she has already had but she appears to be hurting now. Her vet is gone for the day so only emergency vet available right now and they wont do anything for you unless your paying big $ and having your animal seen. I don't want my baby to suffer all night should I give her more medication than what the vet suggested? Is there any pain medication for humans that I can give her I know tramadol is usually considered safe for K-9s? Any advice would be greatly appreciated |
I'm so sorry to hear what she's been through, poor thing. Anytime a surgery takes place, *always* ask beforehand what you are supposed to do for breakthrough pain -- the vet will usually tell you a different dose or more frequent dose of what they're sending you home with.
Is she doing better today?
