I realise that you've taken him outside and held him - and tried to introduce him to those nasty old scary things...
I wonder if you've let him see them from inside your house? With Harry, this is what we did...
We wrapped him really snugly in a blanket - almost like swaddling a newborn baby, and cuddled him in our arms. And we watched from inside our house - going "ooooh + aaah" + clapping with joy with the fun of it all. Then we opened the window, gradually, so that he could hear the noise...bit by bit.
Then we progressed to outside (probably inbetween Christmas + New Year!

) - same wrapping and holding. If he struggled AT ALL, then we'd go in - and repeat.
We've reached the point where Harry actually does his meerkat impersonation to SEE the fireworks out of the window - and rushes to our back door to join in the fun!
