I searched extensively for my baby Roxie. I knew the look I wanted, even if it Isn't "Standard". I was looking for the proper ear set, short nose and a baby doll face. I was also looking for a breeder who had been in the business for a long time and not some fly by night operation online. I also wanted a dog that was 3 pounds or so. My last one was that big and I took her EVERYWHERE. And she loved "Going with Mommie" SO when I lost Chanel, I knew I wanted another small one so I wouldn't have back problems from carrying to often. I never intend to breed my dog so I was looking for a healthy tiny one.
I Narrowed it down to Deb Sillers and Amazing Yorkies, and Kori at Courtash. Kori may not breed to " Standard" but she does have over 40 generations of dogs under her belt. Her practice of breeding the tiny boys to bigger girls should over time produce overall small lines that aren't " Runts" dues to health problems- they are actually genetically small. She was more than happy for me to come to her home in either Colorado OR California. And She also offered the option of bringing the pup to me if I decided to wait until she came back to California where I live. She was not rude, or trying to hide anything. She was also willing to give me DOZENS of references I could call at random to ask about her. She said the average age of her tiny's is the same as a normal size yorkie and has had MOST live to be 14-17 years old. She was very upfront that the statistics about small ones not living long are skewed because of inbreeding or up healthy breeding ( females too small), runts who are small because of health problems and the fact they ARE more fragile a teeny tinys. She breeds bigger females ( most in the 5 or 6 lb range) to TINY boys 1.5 to 2.5 lbs. Yes she does have some larger dogs but would rather breed a dog on the smaller side of "STandard" to a tiny boy. It working for her.
All that said... I went with Deb Sillers for several reasons. 1) she offers a 5 year health guarantee. I've never seen that before and was impressed. 2) she breeds show dogs- FOR SHOW. Any dog too big or too small to show is a flat rate of 1500. 3) because most of her breeding stock are show dogs- they have been genetically/DNA tested to be free of the majority of genetic disorder that tend to plague the breed. That to me was a combination I couldn't turn down. ANd my Roxie is GORGEOUS!( See the attached pictures!) Even my vet said that she was one of the most beautiful and healthy yorkies he had ever seen. ( and he thought Chanel, my previous baby was pretty) SO I have no regrets. And I am planning on getting a SECOND puppy in a few months to keep Roxie company. SO I can personally recommend Deb..and I do HIGHLY.
But if you want a SUPER tiny yorkie ( say under 3 pounds) and that is what matters most to you, and you have several thousand dollars to spend. Kori might be a good choice. Granted I never saw her home...but the two who claim they HAVE seen it obviously joined YT specifically to bash her- so their opinions and stories should be taken with a grain of sand. Say what you want. But there IS a HUGE market for dogs that don't fit the standard...especially those that are smaller than standard. And remember... when the breed becomes popular enough- it may eventually be given "AKC recognition" they are continually adding new categories. Who is to say that "Teacup or Micro Yorkies" ( Or even a MICRO category across breeds) won't ever have AKC recognition. There might not now be a RECOGNIZED " Teacup" yorkie at the AKC..but they definitely exist. And people are spending HUGE amounts of money to get them. It doesn't make these breeders ALL "Terrible abusive and irresponsible people" nor are the buyers shallow and callous people who don't have a pets best interests at heart. There are bad breeders and bad buyers in every breed and in every country but it isnlt fair to lump them all together the way I frequently see done on YT. Courtash lines are exceptionally beautiful (granted beauty is in the eye of the beholder) but 35 year of breeding and selling yorkies isn't exactly something you discount completely. SHe is hardly a " Backyard" breeder. SO if you are in the market for a non standard yorkie, and you want that tiny size and Courtash look and you have the money to pay her prices. The solution to the problem instead of all the yakking, negativity and backstabbing is .."YOU Be willing to fly or drive to Kori and CHECK IT OUT FOR YOURSELF" All the rest is hearsay and petty.
