I brought home two puppies 6 weeks ago. My 9 year old Yorkie headed for the couch all the time. One of the puppies learned to jump up on the couch within days, so the older Yorkie headed for the back of the couch. That is where he stayed for the first 2 weeks. After that, he was curious about the puppies and would get down to see what they were doing.
We have had them 6 weeks now and he jumps right in and plays with them when he wants to and hits the back of the couch when he has had enough.
Give the older dog the freedom and space to get away from the puppy and be safe from it. They are often afraid of puppies, but they will come around in time. As the puppy calms down a little the older dog will be more interested. My older dog will stay on the floor with the puppies whenever they are calm. If they are wild he will stick around if he is in the mood, or get on the back of the couch to get away from them. It just depends on his mood.
When you are playing with the puppy, if the Yorkie comes around play with them too and they will eventually join in.
