The effects of spaying and neutering seem to be breed-specific, and affect the larger breeds more adversely than the smaller breeds, so it's not a one size fits all situation. However, the preponderance of evidence seems to be that spaying before the first heat (but not too early) is beneficial for female dogs in preventing pyometra and mammary cancer. The evidence on neutering male dogs is less convincing, except from the standpoint of population control.
