I trim most of my dogs nails. I have 4 dogs. The puppies nails I have been doing since I brought them home. I trim just a little bit off about every 2 weeks. My big dog I have been trimming his nails for 4 years.

My 9 year old Yorkie though, his nails were curled under when I got him. I started trimming just a touch off the nails the day after I brought him home. Then a little bit more a week later. A little more 2 weeks later. Then 2 weeks later I trimmed a tiny bit and got the quick on one and it scared me. I would get the bleeding stopped and hold him for an hour, set him down and we would be bleeding again. I would get the bleeding stopped, hold him and hour and then let him down and bleeding again. This went on for over 4 hours (not continuous bleeding). I finally wrapped him in a towel and went to bed and it was fine in the morning.

I took him to petsmart and they dremeled his nails and they were able to get him much shorter than what I was going to be able to do in several months. I now take him in there about once a month and they are getting better and better. Once his nails are totally back to normal (if that happens) I will try trimming them again myself.

I hate cutting black nails. I had a dog with white nails and I really preferred that!

I would say go for the dremeling about once a month between grooms, it is worth it and the cost isn't much, at least it wasn't for Teek.
