We actually had allergy tests done on Coco shortly after we adopted her and found out that she is allergic to practically all the grasses in the area where we live  So, she has been on some form of allergy medication since the tests were run which was about 2 years ago.

I made the distinction between destroyed and suppressed because if it's destroyed, it can never come back, but if it's suppressed, it will come back after the drug is stopped. I'm just trying to give a little hope and allay your fears--there was no permanent damage. When dogs are on those drugs, it makes them more susceptible to bacterial and fungal diseases, and if the dog is already susceptible to those kinds of infections, then that's problematic. That's probably what happened in the case you mentioned. It's not as bad if the dog has a healthy immune system to begin with.
I'm sorry to hear about the grass allergies. I hope that the new medication you're trying gives some relief!
