Okay, so I am actually going to talk about two issues. The first is my puppy's Giardia. So back in April she tested positive for the nasty little parasite. I got a combo medication of Flagyl/panacur given to her for 5 days. Fast forward to May for a stool recheck to make sure it cleared and sure enough it had not. I was given another medication (fenbendazole) for 5 days again and told to recheck in two weeks. So its been two weeks and just did another recheck....SHE STILL HAS GIARDIA!! Shes now on another medication for 3 days (Secnidazole). I am at my wits end I feel so bad I have to keep pumping her with meds. She only weighs 3.2lbs as of this week and shes a little over 7months old. I am so careful with her and always watch her when she goes outside to do her business. I've never seen her eat her poop and I also wipe her little tushy after she does her thing EVERY TIME! I also pick up her poop. I know this particular parasite is a hardy one, but has anyone else had this issue that it just doesn't seem to clear up? I do have her on probiotics to help with whatever the meds are probably stripping her of. She doesn't have the typical symptoms of giardia and in fact the only way I knew she had it was because it was her first vet visit and he wanted a sample of her stool. She doesn't have diarrhea, she is my first dog (I've always had family dogs, but this is my own first), and the only thing that I've ever noticed was she poops a lot for a dog so small. Not in quantity but in frequency. I figured it was because she was a puppy and a small one at that. Anyway, I guess i was just wondering if anyone else had this problem with giardia and if there is anything else I should do.
The second thing is she has a swollen toe and the vet gave me antibiotics to help if it is an infection, (Clavamox 62.5 2x day for 7 days). Its been three days so far and last night she threw up her little pill pocket after i gave it to her. She has kept all the other ones down and I don't know if maybe she just overexerted herself running up the stairs to bed. Can antibiotics cause vomiting? She has also seemed a little lethargic and "depressed," but shes only this way towards ME. She has no problem going up to my SO (her dad) or anyone else. This morning when she was playing fetch with my SO he threw the ball towards where I was standing and she wouldn't even get near me to get her ball. She even went into her crate when my SO left the room instead of going on the bed like she normally does when were getting ready for work in the morning. (She sleeps with us in bed, but I keep a crate next to the bed with the door open). I have had her since the early February and I would like to think I know my dog by now, but she is acting so strangely. Could it be the medication? She just started the new giardia med this afternoon, so i can't attest it to that yet. Just looking for some advice or experience. Thank you!
