As Maximo said positive reinforcement will work better than "popping" him. Teach him the Leave It command. Have a treat hidden in your hand. Place a treat on the floor keeping your foot next to it. When he goes for it move your foot over it while saying "LEAVE IT". No contact is required. Just keep your foot over it so he cannot get at it. When he stops trying to get at it give him the treat in your hand and say "TAKE IT". Repeat this multiple time for multiple days. Training him properly is not a one time 10 minute job. There will be times he does not follow the command. This is when your patience and your promise will come in. Do not lose your temper. Do not pop him. Just continue the training. He will come to learn this command. Good luck!
