Just on a professional note on Pantene (I'm a cosmetologist). I've seen on humans that it either works to make their hair like the commercials, soft shiny, etc. but I've also seen on some folks have hair break and be brittle because of it. Like you've mentioned, in a fix it's not bad, but for long term use you'll have to watch the hair's condition carefully. For some, it works well but for others it doesn't. Personally, if it isn't something I make myself for my dog, I would go with something actually formulated for dogs.
Unless I believe the product is just not good at all (White Rain, is a good example), I usually say it all depends on the person's hair, or in this case the dog's.
