Manual and the associated settings will seem like utter Greek for a while, usually. Then after reading and reading some more, it will suddenly sort of click a bit, then click a bit more until it makes total sense.
I the low light conditions you're shooting in, don't forget you can also adjust the ISO which can help a ton! If you go too high w/ ISO, it can get a bit grainy...but sometimes that's a cool look too...just depends upon what you're looking for.
I may have something to help you along too, if I can find it. It's the little guide I received from a beginners DSLR course from years back. I'd probably have to copy it mail it to you...? I'll see if I can find it...
