My basement is also not dogproofed, and Bella won't go down the basement stairs either. The cat goes into the basement, though. It's one of the few places she can go to get away from Bella (besides the study and the cat's room--with litter box, cat food and water bowls, and a cat igloo--which both have baby gates that the cat can jump, but Bella can't).
