Using larger females is also for health reasons. My understanding is that an 8 pound Yorkie doesn't necessarily guarantee a larger litter than a 5 or 6 pound one, although chances are better. Many of the show breeders here have commented that they like their breeding females to be a little longer in the back because they tend to whelp easier.
