In terms of sexes I believe personality or temperament is key - that is to say of your current dog or dogs and the intended future one. Two dominants are likely to rub each other the wrong way at least for a time until it gets sorted out. But I will tell you the worst fights I have seen are between female dogs - which is not to say I have not seen fights between males - but my experience is that it is much shorter and once over stays resolved.
This is the impression I have from reading here on YT and FB. The nastiest of fights or problems are between females.

My boys are not the ideal pair because they are both very strong types. Would be better for one to be more submissive. Thankfully, Max, the top doggy, is patient enough to let his little brother get away with a lot.
