It seems to me that different pups like different toys. Some like squeaky, some don't. Some like fuzzy, some don't. Some like nylabones, some don't. My suggestion would be to buy a variety of toys and see which one he/she likes to play with and then go get more like that one.
And watch how they play with them. We can't give Max little squeaky stuffed animals because he sits down and wants to chew the eyes, buttons, etc off. We don't want him choking on those parts
