I am lucky to have a 9 year old cat who loves dogs! She has loved every dog we have had. One of our dogs tolerates her at best, but since the dog is inside and the cat is outside and the dog is always on a leash it isn't a problem.
The 2 puppy (Yorkies) I just brought home went running to meet the cat outside and she put the smack down on one of the puppies and the other puppy saw that and hit the ground. The cat is only 7 lbs and the same size as my adult Yorkie. Now the puppies see the cat and approach her slowly, crouching near the ground with tails wagging and wait for her to finish the approach. If one of the puppies gets too hyper she just raises her paw and both puppies roll over to her in submission. LOL The cat would not hurt them, only put them in line.
I hope the cat adjusts to the puppy. Sounds like you are doing all you can. As the puppy ages it might get better, the cat might not like the hyperness of the puppy.
