I think this food is probably the best for their dog but my parents are on a fixed income and feel that $8/can is a bit expensive in their current situation since they have spent over $2,000 in vet bills in the last 8 weeks. Unfortunately, they won't allow me to assist, apart from subtle suggestions, re: alternative foods. Therefore, I would appreciate if you could give me some advice since I am having to check US sites from England to try and help.

I have found Hills Science Diet Low GI @ Petsmart for $2.50 a can but I am unsure if this is a good brand or not? If so, can someone confirm? If not, can someone tell me why and suggest an alternative?

In the interim, I have asked my parents to speak to the vet re: alternatives. So far, the vet has advised that dry low GI food will be too hard on the pancreas but I'm not sure if that is forever or just whilst he is recovering from his attack and hospital stay.

Some additional info re: their YT:

He's 12 years old
neutered
enlarged heart w/water in lungs currently (due to known heart murmur)
weighs 5.5lbs
on pain meds and various other for heart and pancreatitis
under vet care

I have spoken to the vet who has confirmed their dog is improving and does not need further hospitalization. However, I forgot to ask about food due to some other issues where my mom required consolation. Additionally, I am currently up to my neck in research, studying for an exam on June 3 and stressed because my dad has a biliary blockage and the cause of this is as of yet unknown. Due to aforementioned, I am on short time and completely distracted with stress and worry so I really would appreciate any assistance.

I hope this post made sense and thank you all so much in advance.
Hi there. My Barney is almost 15. At age 5, he was hospitalized for pancreatitis. He went back to regular moderate fat home cooked food. At age 10, he had another acute pancreatitis episode. We modified his home cooked diet to be very fat restricted (3%). I wanted a back up dog food and was advised to use the RC gastrointestinal low fat dry food. He eats this food as a backup and I find it works very well. My dog also has an enlarged heart due to mitral valve disease (but unlike your parents dog isn't in failure and has no edema).

If this was my dog, I would feed bland chicken breast and white rice (50/50) for a couple of weeks OR the GI canned. Once the dog was recovering, I would move to the RC gastrointestinal low fat or continue home cooked.
