From what I've read, Dawn can be used 'SPARINGLY', otherwise, it can dry the dogs skin out which is probably what's happened since you say that your poor dog has itchy, red skin.
I'm not sure what would immediately restore the ph balance or moisturize the skin so that he has immediate relief? Have you talked to the vet about what to do apart from Benadryl? Benadryl will obviously work for an allergic reaction, assuming he's had one, but it won't do anything to moisturize the skin so I'd probably get some advice re: that.
